Area visitors and residents enjoy easy access to a multitude of outdoor recreation venues within short traveling distance of downtown.
Within recent years, the City and surrounding areas have become home to a multitude of hiking biking trails with some linking to Pittsburgh and Washington DC. Furthermore, two new white water rafting parks are being developed 10 miles upstream from Downtown.
Over seven state parks are located within 40 miles of the downtown offering camping, swimming, hiking, and canoeing.
For the golf enthusiast, Berkley Hills Golf Course owned by the City and privately operated offers a beautiful nine holes of golf. Within an hour drive of the City, you can find over 30 additional courses.
Weekend getaways can be found at the area’s three all-season resorts. Seven Springs Mountain Resort, Hidden Valley Four Seasons Resort, and Blue Knob Ski Resort offer year round activity including some of the best skiing in the Eastern U.S. in addition to golf, horseback riding, hiking, and spa services.
SPECTATOR SPORTS
During the fall and winter months, the Johnstown Chiefs can be seen heating up the ice at the Cambria County War Memorial Arena in the heart of downtown. The Chiefs, the oldest franchise in the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL), and the War Memorial Arena were the premise and location for the cult sports movie “Slapshot”.
In 2005, the City welcomed its second professional sports team – the Johnstown Riverhawks. The Riverhawks are a franchise of the American Indoor Football League.
Every August, the Point Stadium hosts the annual All American Amateur Baseball Association (AAABA) Tournament. Teams from all over the eastern United States compete for the national title in front of thousands of fans and professional scouts in what is considered the country’s best amateur baseball tournament.
The International brings international and Olympic caliber racers to the City each year in the largest professional stage race in the country. The topography and natural beauty of the region attracted this international event to the area for the challenge it presents to cyclists.
Sunnehanna Country Club in suburban Johnstown hosts the Sunnehanna Amateur every June. The nation’s top amateur golfers, including Tiger Woods, have competed in this three day tournament since 1954.
