CURBSIDE

recycling binJohnstown collects recyclables curbside biweekly.  Residents receive a recycling bin when they register their address with the City.  The bin is to be used for recycling only.  NO TRASH Items collected are plastic jugs, jars & bottles #1 and #2, aluminum, tin or steel food and beverage cans and clear glass bottles, jugs and jars (no lids).  All items must be rinsed before placing in bin.  Residents are encouraged to recycle newspapers & magazines at the drop-off centers.

DROP-OFF CENTER

Cambria County has placed recycling containers at Roxbury Park (Derby Street entrance) and the D. St. Ball Field for area residents to drop off recycables.  Items include newspapers, magazines, aluminum, tin or steel food and beverage cans and plastic jugs, bottles & jars.

APPLIANCE DROP-OFF

The City, in conjunction with PA Clean Ways of Cambria County, sponsors an applicance-recycling day in the Spring and Fall of the year.  Appliances that contain Freon such as freezers, refrigerators, dehumidifiers and air conditioners and other appliances such as stoves, washers, dryers, hot water tanks, microwaves, etc., may be dropped off for a small fee.  Dates are advertised prior to the event.

MOTOR OIL RECYCLING

The City accepts used Motor Oil (free of charge) for recycling into heating fuel, new motor oil and industrial lubricants.  Oil may be dropped off at the Highway Garage located at 419 Sixth Avenue in Cambria City, Monday through Friday, 7:00 am - 2:30 pm.

YARD WASTE

Residents in Johnstown have two (2) options for disposing of leaves and grass clippings.  They can either sweep them into the gutter on street cleaning night or bag them and place them by the curb for pickup.  Other yard waste may be bagged or bundled and placed by the curb.  Residents must call 533-2089 to schedule pick-up.

CHRISTMAS TREE RECYCLING

Christmas trees may be dropped off at Roxbury Park (Derby Street side-lot by the big blue bins).  In the past five (5) years, we have recycled approximately 1,500 trees.

TIRES, BATTERIES AND MISCELLANEOUS

The City maintains a list of businesses that recycle tires, batteries, scrap metals and used cooking oil.  Call 814-533-2089 for more information.

RECYCLING FACTS

  • The United States has only six percent (6%) of the world population, but produces half of the world’s garbage.
  • Recycling one glass bottle saves enough electricity to light a 100-watt bulb for four (4) hours.
  • Seventeen (17) trees are saved when you recycle one (1) ton (2,000 lbs.) of paper.
  • In America, 1,500 aluminum cans are recycled every second.

RECYCLING FACTS

  • The City of Johnstown receives Grants from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources under Section 902, Act 101, The Municipal Waste Planning, Recycling and Waste Resolution Act of 1988.  These Grants are used for:

- Education;
- Recycling Containers; and
- Collection Equipment.

LAST YEAR RESIDENTS RECYCLED

  • 383 Tons of co-mingled materials (clear glass, aluminum, tin and plastic);
  • Over one (1) ton of batteries;
  • Eleven (11) tons of tires;
  • Seventy-Nine (79) tons of appliances;
  • One Thousand Nine Hundred Seventy-Five (1,975) gallons of used motor oil;
  • Four Hundred Eighty-Five (485) tons of yard and leaf waste.
